The outgoing Mayor of Warwick has presented donations totalling just over £4,000 to local charities.

Cllr Richard Edgington's 12 months as the town's first citizen came to an end on Tuesday evening, as he was replaced by Cllr Parminder Singh Birdi at a ceremony at Warwick Castle.

But before the town's youngest ever mayor handed over the chains, he was able to present cheques to a number of local causes.

Having not chosen any specific organisations to support when he was elected, Cllr Edgington instead decided to "promote recovery" across the town and support a number of charities across the year.

The £4,000 pot has been raised across the year through a number of events and fundraisers that he has been part of.

During Tuesday's ceremony, representatives from Warwickshire Search and Rescue, Safeline and Warwickshire Vision Support were all able to accept donations.

He said: "Thank you to all of you for all your hard work, and for all the charities that do such hard work across the town."

During his leaving speech, Cllr Edgington was also quick to thank all the community groups, organisations and volunteers who contribute to local life.

"In Warwick however, the town council is only a small member of the wider groups and individuals that do so much and go above and beyond," he said.

"I feel honoured in this last year in particular to have been part of and worked with these incredible groups and organisations.

"I'd like to thank everyone who contributes to the town and makes everything happen - your ongoing service is truly remarkable."
