Warwickshire's newest Virtual Reality (VR) games venue, The VR Space, opens its doors to the public today (15 August), promising an immersive experience for children aged eight and over, and for the whole family.

Located at the Space Business Centre, Plato Close, Tachbrook Park, the venue offers high-spec PCs, headsets, and a wide range of games designed to bring friends and families together.

Visitors can also expect some unique touches, including an animated gangster gorilla, currently awaiting a name via a public competition, who delivers the safety briefing in a way that keeps kids engaged from the start.

How it all began

The idea for The VR Space came to business and life partners, David and Manjit Checkley, two years ago, after visiting a Sandbox VR venue in Birmingham.

"We both thought, 'this is an amazing experience'" said Manjit.

"It was so much fun!

"Often you see parents just watching their children play, but we wanted to create something in Leamington and Warwick where the whole family can get involved."

The journey from idea to reality

Both Manjit and David describe themselves as entrepreneurial by nature.

With Manjit running several other business ventures, she decided it was time to channel her skills into a physical space where people could visit and enjoy something new.

The couple, supported by their 12-year-old son and close family, designed the VR Space themselves, from planning the layout to installing the tech.

They even taught themselves how to use the equipment and researched the industry by connecting with others in the VR world.

"A man called Marcus in Gloucester has his own VR place, and he has been our godsend.

"He's guided us throughout the whole thing, every time that something went wrong or we had an issue, we'd message Marcus, so shout out to Marcus at Gloucester!"

Describing the journey of bringing The VR Space to life, Manjit said: "It's been like a rollercoaster.

"It's consumed us. One minute I'm crying, the next I'm laughing.

"But working as a team has made all the difference."

Although the idea was ready two years ago, the right location wasn't available.

That changed when David spotted that this unit was for rent.

"We had seen so many units that I doubted this one would be right," explained Manjit.

"But the flexible contract, the nearby bowling alley and eateries, and the footfall from other businesses made me love it instantly."

A taste of what's to come

A recent taster weekend saw both children and adults testing the VR equipment, with everyone leaving impressed and excited.

"I think it's something everybody should try at least once," said Manjit.

Following today's official launch, The VR Space will open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with plans to extend hours during school holidays and to open for a full week in October.

Alongside family and friends' bookings, the venue will also host birthdays and special events.

As Manjit put it: "You've got to take a risk – I feel like everyone should take at least one big risk a day."
