Warwick's MP said tonight's no-confidence vote in Boris Johnson was the Conservative's "chance to finally do the right thing" and remove the Prime Minister from power.

Tory rebels were voted down by 211 to 148 in their attempts to unseat the PM.

But MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western said Mr Johnson would have been removed from office if the vote was not just for Conservative members.

"I'm confident that if it was down to the public, he'd have gone months ago," he said.

"An Ipsos MORI poll shows 64 per cent of the British public are dissatisfied with the job he's doing – with nearly half of Conservative Party members also saying MPs should vote against him tonight.

"People are angry with the Government and the PM's approval ratings are at historic lows."

Today's confidence vote, which was triggered by Tory MPs following the publication of Sue Gray's report, saw 41 per cent of Mr Johnson's own MPs vote to oust him from office.

Despite the narrow margin the PM described the result as "decisive" and was "an opportunity to put behind us all the stuff that the media goes on about".

But Labour MP Mr Western, who described the ballot as "long overdue", said Mr Johnson's position at No.10 was far from secure.

"It was a truly humiliating spectacle to see him being booed by the public in front of the Queen at her Platinum Jubilee," he said.

"I'm sorry to say this but Boris Johnson has poisoned our politics and, like the public, his MPs must know this."

Adding: "For months I've been urging Conservative MPs – particularly those in Warwickshire – to put the national interest ahead of their party's interests.

"So far only one Warwickshire Conservative MP has called on the Prime Minister to resign and that was in the last few days."

Mr Johnson is now safe from another confidence vote for another year following his victory today.
