Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington, has welcomed the "biggest investment" in hospice care "in a generation" and "a new deal for GPs to fix the front door of the NHS".

Last month, the government confirmed £25 million for upgrades and refurbishments for hospices across England, including here in Warwickshire.

Myton Hospice will receive over £200,000 for this purpose.

The cash will be distributed immediately for the 2024/25 financial year with an additional £75 million to follow across the country from April.

This immediate cash injection will allow hospices to purchase essential new medical equipment, undertake building refurbishments, improve technology, upgrade facilities for patients and families and implement energy efficiency measures.

On this announcement, Mr Western said: "Hospices do incredible work, caring for patients and families often in some of the hardest moments of their lives. So many locally know firsthand the brilliance of Myton Hospice and the care they provide.

"I am delighted to see them receiving this funding for upgrades and refurbishments.

"The work they do is crucial and it is more than welcome that the government is supporting them in this way."

In other health news, the government also announced last month a "new deal for GPs" which they claim will "fix the front door of the NHS".

The plans will require GP surgeries to allow patients to request appointments online which they say will free up the phones who need them most.

The Labour government pledged in its manifesto to restore "family" doctors and "end the 8am scramble" for GP appointments.

The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting MP, has said these plans are "the first step to fixing the front door to the NHS, bringing back the family doctor, and ending the 8am scramble".

The plans are backed by an extra £889 million in funding for GP surgeries in England.

Mr Western commented: "The GP is so often the first place we turn when we need the NHS and too often, people are struggling to get an appointment with their GP and find themselves ringing at 8am, only to be number 30 in the queue.

"This investment and new deal with the GPs will be hugely important in resetting this and helping to enable GPs to deliver the service their patients need."
