Matt Western on four years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and new around SEND reforms
By Matt Western MP 24th Feb 2026
This week marked four years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Many of us will vividly remember the scenes on our TV screens in those early days as our European neighbour was invaded and the horror that ensued.
We stand resolutely with Ukraine and our European partners in defying Russia's act of aggression. This was underlined in my recent meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian and Polish Embassies here in Leamington.
To begin with, I want to recognise the sheer strength and determination of the Ukrainian people. Many in the West didn't believe Ukraine would last days, never mind years. They have shown remarkable resistance and resilience in the face of such brutality from the Russian regime. They are not only defending their freedom but also that of Europe, including us here in the UK. They are owed huge respect.
I also want to recognise the incredible support we have seen shown by the people of Warwick, Leamington, Whitnash and the villages towards the people of Ukraine, both those who have made the UK their home and those who remain in Ukraine.
We have seen huge fundraising efforts, support systems established for our new Ukrainian community, dozens of ambulances donated to the frontline and so much more. There are too many excellent people to name who have done this work, but they have done the most incredible job and continue to do so.
I was privileged to co-drive two ambulances in recent years to Ukraine. I heard first hand from the Ukraine military how appreciated they were and to know that our community made that happen was something to be immensely proud of.
Only this month, we were joined by two senior diplomats from the Embassies of Poland and Ukraine, who came to Leamington to recognise the extraordinary efforts of our communities. I was proud to see the Polish and Ukrainian flags flying alongside the Union Jack on the Town Hall as we welcomed our distinguished guests to our town. They were both moved by this demonstration of solidarity and respect.
Ukraine has shown remarkable strength, and they are owed our support. We will keep supporting them, both locally and nationally. It is the right thing to do. I fear those few that disagree with this do not understand the scale of the threat Russia presents.
Finally, I want to highlight the news around SEND reforms this week. I have spoken to many parents and carers of SEND children and professionals who work with SEND children and know how frustrating and difficult so many have long found the system. I have raised many of these conversations with Ministers and welcome that the Government recognises the current system is broken and needs reform. We must do this carefully and with parents and carers involved every step of the way. I will be engaging closely with this and feeding back to Ministers along the way.
As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any issues or concerns you would like to raise with me. I can be reached at [email protected] or on 01926 882006.
