Matt Western hopeful 'sense will prevail' over controversial housing scheme
Matt Western says he hopes "sense will prevail" as plans to build 200 homes between Sydenham and Whitnash were called in by the Secretary of State.
The Labour MP for Warwick and Leamington welcomed the news that an enquiry will take place to examine the controversial plans on land near Campion School playing fields, which he has spoken out against since 2015.
Warwick District Council originally refused to grant planning permission for the development, only for developer AC Lloyd to be given the go ahead for the scheme by a planning inspector after an appeal.
But after Mr Western asked for the Secretary of State to call in the application, the government will now review the scheme.
"These flawed plans will only cause issues for local residents, increasing the strain on already hard pushed services, creating a significant increase in traffic and would do little to address the affordability crisis," he said.
"I am hopeful that sense will prevail, and we'll get the decision that is right for the community, with them at the forefront of the decision, not the developers."
Mr Western, who first opposed the building of the development when he was a county councillor, started the campaign Stop East Whitnash (StEW) eight years ago in 2015, urging for no more homes to be built in that area.
Concerns were raised that there would a lack of infrastructure for the new builds, with no plans to build additional shops nor increase spaces at the local GP practice and the development would see a real increase in traffic in the local area.
Speaking after the local elections results at the start of the month, Mr Western told Nub News that overdevelopment of the district is one of the biggest issues facing the new councils.
