A major international cycle race which was set to head to Warwickshire twice this summer has been cancelled due to funding issues.

Stage one of the Women's Tour 2023 was supposed to finish in Leamington Spa on Wednesday 7 June, with the race's Grand Départ due to be hosted by Stratford-upon-Avon.

But organisers, who last month launched a crowdfunding campaign, said it has "proved impossible to deliver the event" because of "increased running costs and a reduced level of commercial support".

Over 100 of the world's best riders were set to return to Warwickshire for the third day of the five-stage race, setting off from Coleshill in what would have been the market town's first appearance in the race.

Warwickshire has played a big role in the Women's Tour, having previously hosted the prestigious race's first hill-top finish (at Burton Dassett in 2019) and time trial (in Atherstone two years ago).

But with organisers still £400,000 short, the race has been cancelled.

"The Women's Tour thanks everybody who donated for their unwavering loyalty, as well as all the messages of goodwill that have been sent," organisers Sweetspot said.

"This outcome is incredibly disappointing for the stakeholders set to host this year's race, who have shown great support and understanding throughout this process.

"We will continue to work with them to explore opportunities for hosting world-class cycling events in the near future."

More than 500 people helped to raise £18,000 through the crowdfunding campaign.
