Matt Western, MP for Warwick and Leamington, has taken his campaign for better prostate cancer testing to Parliament, paying tribute to a local man whose charity has helped improve awareness and access to testing across the UK.

The MP praised Warwickshire-based Graham Fulford and the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust for "the phenomenal work that his charitable trust has done to promote awareness and improve testing across the United Kingdom."

Since 2004, the Trust has been running tests, delivering more than 470,000, and finding around 4,000 cancers. They estimate that that has collectively added more than 32,000 years of life.

Matt Western made the case for "wider and more expansive targeted screening" and shared that "prostate cancer is the most common kind of cancer among men, with around 12,000 dying from it every year."

The MP also highlighted that " black men are more than twice as likely to die from cancer as white men."

Commenting on the debate and his campaign, Matt Western said: "This is a hugely important subject and one which we must continue raising greater awareness of.

"We have some brilliant work being done locally, with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust and the South Warwickshire Prostate Cancer Support Group, with whom I have had valuable conversations in recent weeks in anticipation of this debate in Parliament."

In recent years, Matt Western has been campaigning for greater awareness of the need to get a prostate cancer test, known as a PSA test, after a friend of his, Nigel Higgins, lost his life to prostate cancer. Nigel was well know to the wider community especially though his cycle shop business in Leamington.

Mr Western recalls a conversation with Nigel after he was diagnosed where the MP agreed he would continue Nigel's campaign in his memory.

Mr Western shared: "I was proud to speak in the debate and press the Government for wider and more expansive targeted screening on behalf of Nigel Higgins and the 240 constituents who signed the petition in support of better screening and I will continue to campaign to see the improvements we need."

As part of this campaign to bring greater, national awareness to the issue, Matt Western has written to the Speaker of the House of Commons encouraging him to consider an annual screening programme in Parliament.
