Hatton residents are facing almost a year of disruption as roadworks for a major new housing estate get underway.

In a letter to locals, Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has warned the works - which will see a new right turn lane and crossing installed - are set to begin later this month.

The works form part of Taylor Wimpey's new Union View estate on Birmingham Road which will eventually see 150 homes built in the village.

And while the council has said minimising disruption to locals has been "at the forefront" of the plans, Hatton residents are set to face 24/7 traffic lights along the road for the months to come.

One local has warned the works will be a "major disaster area" and said years of pointing out the impact the development had "come home to roost".

"The fiasco that has emerged between highways' incompetence and agreeing to Union View without undertaking any traffic survey since 2011 has now hit the buffers," they said.

"As what can only be best described as madness, there will be 24/7 lights on A4177 outside the Shell garage.

"The infrastructure cannot sustain what is about to be an apocalyptic disaster for Warwick and Leamington and all surrounding motorway networks."

The WCC website says the works will see a 'ghost right turn lane' built for the development by contractor McPhillips Ltd.

Residents were also told that the project will take longer than expected due to necessary drainage works, "restricted working space" and having few workers on site.

"Unfortunately some disruption will be unavoidable though efforts will be made as far as reasonably practicable to keep traffic delays to a minimum," the letter to residents said.

"Birmingham Road carries a very high volume of traffic and it will be important to consider how and when traffic management is introduced on the road in order to manage the traffic and protect the travelling public and the work force.

"The developer, local authority and contractor teams have been working together to agree how best to manage traffic to minimise delays on the Birmingham Road and the surrounding road network."

There will also be some road closures during the works.

Resident can find out more about the works on the WCC website.
