Camping and caravanning is set to continue at Hatton Country World past the end of 2022 after permission was given for a temporary site to become permanent.

Warwick District Council gave the tourist attraction the green light for a temporary campsite last July, with the scheme set to run up until January 1 2023.

But district planners have now accepted a change to the original proposal that will see it become a permanent feature at the Dark Lane business.

Plans submitted by Hatton Country World said the pandemic has caused a change in demand for holidays with people choosing to stay in the UK rather than travel abroad.

"This situation is expected to last for several years, as the barriers to foreign holidays (largely based around uncertainty, risk of losing money, cost and availability of hotels and flights) are not going to be all removed in the short term," it said.

"Expectations are that the process could take five years."

It added: "The existing HCW site contributes towards economic growth through supporting sustainable tourism in the area and providing significant employment opportunities at the site.

"The camping and caravan site brings in vital additional revenue streams, through pitch fees, footfall across the retail and catering units and return visits across the attractions from the resident tourists, supporting the viability of the wider HCW business."

In approving the development on the green belt site a district report said the scheme was appropriate use of the land.

However, following concerns raised by the Warwickshire County Council's highways department, the site has now been capped at 69 spaces.

"The highway authority raised concerns regarding the increase in pitch numbers on the site and the additional impact this would have on local highway conditions," the report said.

"The original permission did not restrict maximum numbers of pitches within the description of development or via planning condition.

"Discussions with the applicant have led to the agreement to attach a condition to this permission limiting the maximum occupancy to 69 pitches at all times."
