Council planners have given the green light for a former Aldi supermarket to be demolished to make way for a huge new storage facility.

Warwick District Council has granted planning permission for the works which will allow Big Yellow Storage to build 7,590m² of storage space.

Plans will see the Queensway supermarket flattened for the major new facility.

The Aldi site has been vacant since the discount retailer built a new store just down the road.

Approving the plans, a council report said: "The principle of the development is considered acceptable and the proposal would not result in any significant harm to the character of the area, residential amenity, highway safety, ecology or flood risk."

It added: "The proposed building would be largely set in from the boundary with Queensway, with an area of soft landscaping in between, and this also helps to mitigate the prominence of the building within the street scene.

"This landscaping includes ornamental planting, native hedgerow and several native trees."

The scheme was refined during the planning process to include a 'feature green wall' to break up the appearance of the building.

"The proposed building would act as a barrier between the closest residential and the service area, which would be located over the existing surface car park of the site to the northwest," the application said.

Big Yellow said it held two consultation events with local residents last year, to ask for feedback on the designs.

"The proposed redevelopment aims to create a positive impact on the local area, ensuring the new building integrates smoothly into its surroundings while contributing to the visual and economic vitality of the community," the application continued.
