Discovering Smith Street: Stories behind Warwick's independent businesses - PART ONE

Smith Street in Warwick is lined with independent businesses that bring character, creativity, and community spirit to the heart of the town. But how well do we know the people and stories behind the shopfronts?
At the end of July, the Smith Street party will be held once again, bringing together a host of businesses for a day of community celebration.
As with previous years, it will see the street pedestrianised for the day and lined with stalls, with live music on the stage throughout the day.
Ahead of the event, we reached out to every business along Smith Street and asked them to share a little about who they are, what they do, and why they do it.
Over the next three days, we will be showcasing the businesses that responded to our questions.
Diffuse Retail
Diffuse Retail was founded by Hannah Teale in 2023. Here's what she had to say about the business.
What is your favourite thing(s) about running your business in Warwick?
Running my business in Warwick is a dream come true—it's where I grew up, so having my own venture here fills me with pride. Warwick isn't just my home; it's a place filled with memories and opportunities.
What I love most about running a business here is the awesome community of independent small businesses. We're all in it together, and it creates such a lively, welcoming atmosphere. When people come to Warwick, they're in for a great day out, thanks to the variety and passion we all bring to the table.
Starting a business can be daunting, but the support I've received here is incredible. Everyone is eager to help, share advice, or just give a friendly nod of encouragement. It's like being part of a big, supportive family that wants everyone to succeed.
And let's talk about the setting—Warwick's beauty is hard to beat. From the magnificent castle to the charming historic centre and stunning parks, it's a gorgeous backdrop for any business. It's a joy to see customers enjoying what our town has to offer, knowing they're enchanted by the same sights that make me fall in love with Warwick all over again.
In short, running my business here isn't just about work; it's about being part of Warwick's story. It's a privilege to contribute to this vibrant, beautiful community, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
What have been some of the most rewarding moments and biggest challenges you've faced as an independent business?
Starting my business has definitely been a rollercoaster – full of highs and lows. But honestly, the biggest reward has been getting to meet and support so many amazing local women. Helping them find the perfect outfits for special occasions and seeing how happy they are always feels so rewarding. Over time, I've built relationships with many regular customers, and that's a real privilege.
In the first year alone, I was lucky enough to be picked as a finalist in some national industry awards, like Best New Independent Boutique and Planet Saver. That recognition meant a lot and gave me a real boost.
That said, running a small business, especially a physical store in the fashion world, isn't always easy. Rising costs and limited consumer spending are real challenges right now. It makes the support of the Warwick community even more important — knowing people still want to visit and support local shops keeps me going.
On a personal note, being a mum to two young kids adds its own set of challenges. Juggling the demands of being an entrepreneur and a mum can be tough, but I wouldn't change it. Sometimes, you might spot my two little helpers in the store with me, helping out or just keeping me company. It's all part of the journey, and I feel grateful for every moment, both the highs and the lows.
Running my business has absolutely tested me, but it's also been incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

What is your favourite thing(s) about running your business in Warwick?
The sense of community between the business owners is great. On Smith street we have a WhatsApp group where everyone supports each other and is really friendly.
Warwick is unique in that most of the businesses are independent, mostly owned by people who grew up locally or live here now, and everyone wants to see the town thrive.
What have been some of the most rewarding moments and biggest challenges you've faced as an independent business?
One of our most rewarding moments is winning Muddy Stilettos Studio of the Year 2025, which is voted for by our customers and the public.
A challenge we face is limited parking of only one hour on Smith Street. It doesn't give people an incentive to stay and visit multiple businesses.
