Detailed plans to build 476 homes south of Warwick have been given the green light by district planners.

The houses will form the first part of The Asps development, between Europa Way and Banbury Road.

Ultimately the site will see 900 homes, a primary school and park and ride with up to 500 spaces built.

The project was initially refused by Warwick District Council's planning committee in 2014 but was eventually given the go ahead by the Secretary of State in 2016.

Whilst the council received the government's decision with "deep rooted disappointment" it has now granted permission for two separate reserved matters applications for the first part of the development.

Taylor Wimpey

The first detailed application, approved last week, was submitted by Taylor Wimpey for 271 homes on the southern edge of the site.

Of those, 91 will be classed as affordable.

Taylor Wimpey said the design of the some the houses had been inspired by the Broadway at Letchworth Garden City.

The application said: "'The Asps will deliver a new garden suburb to the historic town of Warwick.

"The development will be a high-quality addition to the town which responds to the setting of the nearby Warwick Castle Park and creates a new urban edge with a sensitive transition to the rural landscape beyond.

"The development will deliver new homes, a primary school, local centre and a park & ride facility within a network of green spaces linked to the wider countryside, yet within easy reach of the town centres of both Warwick and Royal Leamington Spa.

"The development will provide a vibrant, sustainable, healthy and community focused new neighbourhood in which people will aspire to live."

Taylor Wimpey announced in March that the first batch of homes on the development would be put up for sale this May.

Sales will initially be run online before a sales office opens in the autumn.

Bloor Homes

The second reserved matters application approved last week was for a further 205 houses, for Bloor Homes.

Built on the land adjacent to Taylor Wimpey's site, this slightly smaller site will see a mix of one to four bedroom homes built.

More than 40 per cent of these houses will be designated as affordable, and there will be a mix of bungalows, two-storey and town houses included.

The site will be accessed from the main spine road off Europa Way.

Each dwelling will have a private rear garden and two car parking spaces and/or garage.

Both applications were approved on delegated authority.
