Decision expected on new alcohol licence for reopening hotel following objections from locals
By James Smith 20th Apr 2026
Councillors will this week make a decision on whether to grant a new alcohol licence for a South Warwickshire hotel which is getting ready to reopen.
AAIE Warwickshire Limited has submitted the application for Wroxall Abbey, asking for permission for alcohol to be sold for consumption on and off site from 10am to 1am seven days a week.
The original application had asked for permission for live music and performances to be allowed inside and out until 1am also.
However, this has drawn objections from Environmental Health, neighbours and a local business.
"I object to the licence running outside the premises for music or performances live or recorded until 1am," one resident said.
"I do not object to it ending at a more reasonable time of 11pm.
"We can clearly hear music from Wroxall and being played until 1am will cause a nuisance."
Nearby Mousley House Farm Campsite also voiced its concerns about the early morning finishes for the outdoor entertainment.
"We have previously complained to Warwick council and Environmental Health due to late night events taking place outside Wroxall Abbey," the business wrote.
"Outside music is clearly audible from the campsite and will destroy our business."
Environmental Health said the outdoor noise should be limited until 11pm and the business should have to complete a noise management plan before opening.
An email on behalf of the applicant said it was happy with the 11pm finish and that it wanted to work with locals, saying the business will run differently to previous tenants at Wroxall Abbey.
"My client has carefully considered the concerns raised and is keen to work collaboratively with all parties to ensure that the premises operate in a manner that is respectful to local residents and fully promotes the licensing objectives - particularly the prevention of public nuisance," the letter said.
It added: "In light of the above, these proposals represent a significant and genuine effort to mitigate the concerns raised, particularly in relation to noise and late-night disturbance.
"It is therefore respectfully suggested that the amended application now strikes a fair balance between the operation of the venue and the amenity of local residents."
Wroxall Abbey closed again in January 2025 after just two years in business, and was put on the market shortly after.
The latest submission for the Victorian Mansion house hotel said it is "undergoing a complete refurbishment" and will reopen with 48 rooms.
"The intention is to licence the hotel itself as well as the extensive grounds for use as a hotel, wedding and conference venue," it said.
The application continued: "The applicant has recently acquired these premises and already has a similar successful hotel in Elstree.
"The premises will be run to a high standard by an experienced manager who is the holder of the award in personal licence holders."
A decision on the licence will be made on Thursday (23 April).
No announcement has been made on when Wroxall will reopen.
