Councillors have scrapped plans to build a hydrogen hub along the M40, just months after they were hailed a "flagship" project in renewable energy production.

Last October, Warwick District Council's cabinet unanimously backed a new hydrogen strategy which could have seen the development built on land at Greys Mallory.

But after reviewing the strategy, the new administration has decided not to push ahead with the project.

Members were told there were issues with the proposed site and said the business case no longer "stacked up".

"Things have changed and I do think this is the right direction to move in," said Cllr Will Roberts.

"What I am particularly welcoming is we are going to look at exploring HBO fuel as a bridging fuel.

"We do need to be careful how we source, but I certainly welcome that, and I think that is a good way and quick way at looking at decarbonising our refuse fleet."

Cllr Andrew Day - who was council leader when the strategy was first put together - said it made sense to have a rethink.

"We were keen because we wanted to take carbon out of waste management vehicles and that was where the issue started," he added.

"We are disappointed that this isn't going ahead, but for a very good reason we understand.

"I look forward to hearing from the administration how you are going to decarbonise our waste vehicles."
