Councillor says Royal Mail is 'neglecting' residents by not providing post boxes on new estates
A local councillor has accused Royal Mail of neglecting residents on new build estates around Warwick by refusing to install new post boxes.
Cllr Hema YellaPragada said the service has been ignoring calls by elderly residents who have no choice but to travel around a mile to post a letter or parcel.
The Green Party members for Warwick Myton & Heathcote said The Myton Green, Priors and Beauchamp estates, home to several new housing developments and over 1,000 residents, have been particularly affected by the lack of post boxes.
She said she has provided evidence of the need for the boxes to Royal Mail, but said the response has been "disappointing".
"Royal Mail's response has been disappointing and fails to take into account the practical realities faced by the community members," she said.
"For many elderly or individuals without access to transportation, walking nearly a mile to post a letter can be a significant burden.
"Additionally, with a significant increase in the number of people working from home, posting letters is important for their work/ business.
"Travelling for nearly a mile consumes their valuable time and energy that could be better utilised elsewhere.''
Royal Mail is required by Ofcom to provide a post box within a half mile of any residential area, but use an 'as the crow flies' measurement rather than the actual distance someone has to travel.
Cllr YellaPragada added: "Royal Mail are meant to provide a service for everyone.
"Hiding behind technical responses and nitpicking over a few metres is just not good enough - it's obvious that the residents of this area needs a postbox!"
The new councillor also said she is continuing to fight for a new local shop in the area and safe walking and cycling links to schools, GPs and The Shires.
Royal Mail has been approached for comment.
