Councillor calls for action following multiple complaints about rubbish in Warwick
A district councillor has called for answers following multiple complaints about rubbish in the centre of Warwick.
Speaking at last week's full Warwick District Council meeting, Cllr Katya Dray said she receives a large number of emails from residents complaining about the state of the town centre, and asked for more to be done to keep the town clean.
"I have been receiving emails from residents complaining about rubbish in Warwick, especially Warwick town centre," the Labour councillor said.
"The problems are twofold because there is an enormous amount of fly tipping, as well as bins not being emptied regularly enough and therefore I am almost in daily contact with the officers and contract services about it.
"The problem is always worse when there are concerts and events in the town.
"Warwick has many visitors in the town and so the left rubbish is not a good look and almost attracts vermin.
"Do you agree that we need more bins in Warwick to deal with the rubbish?
"And more rubbish collections, especially during concert times and other events in the town."
In response, portfolio holder for neighbourhood Cllr Will Roberts said all the bins in the town are emptied daily.
He also said the council was working with private event locations to resolve litter issues across Warwick.
"Installing and emptying and maintaining additional bins is possible but there is an increase in contract costs so we need to carefully consider what the best options are here," he explained.
"I am certainly happy to take this away and review what we can do.
"When there are events in the town centre, it is the responsibility of the event organiser to pay for the management of the increased waste.
"Of course this is a lot easier when it is an event on our land and can be more difficult when the event is, let's say, at the castle or the racecourse."
