Local MP Matt Western has called for better pedestrian and cycle access to the new Oakley School after a child was hit by a car last week.

The Labour MP said he was "horrified" to learn of the incident on the Harbury Lane junction last Wednesday (October 2) which left the child with "very serious injuries".

The girl was taken to University Hospital Coventry at around 6.30pm after paramedics were called to the scene.

Mr Western said the access to the school is "not good enough" and has written to Warwickshire County Council asking for a "long overdue" fix to the problem.

"I am firmly of the belief that the school should never been allowed to be opened to pupils without safe access other than by car," the letter to Cllr Jan Matecki, portfolio holder for transport and planning said.

"As I stressed at the meeting [with council officers at the school], there is absolute urgency for you as a council to find the money to deliver safe access to the school from the new estates.

"It cannot and must not take an incident involving a child for this to be sorted.

"Parents have every right to know their children can get to school safely and anything less is unacceptable."
