A canalside pub could be demolished and replaced with a five-storey block of flats if plans are approved.

An application to knock down the Waterside Inn and replace it with a 42-bed apartment building has been submitted to Warwick District Council.

The Queensway pub, which was built in the 1990s, is currently closed and the owners Cresco Investors Limited said they have been unable to find a new tenant.

"The existing premises has had prolonged difficulty in finding a long-term tenant since 2019 due to its lack of viability as a profitable business," the application said.

"It was shown to several operators who had an active requirement to find a premises to lease; however, their response was universally negative."

Instead Cresco want to build a mixture of one, two and three bed flats.

There would also be 42 parking spaces including 34 for electric vehicles.

However, five objections to the plans have already been submitted, including one from Warwick Town Council's planning committee.

Members said there were "concerns about the impact on the Canal Conservation area" and that the size of the development was not in keeping with the local area.

Adding that there wasn't enough parking.

Whilst Mrs Babara Lynn added: "The proposed replacement building is totally unsuitable for the waterside environment, both in scale and mass.

"It is in the Canal Consevation area but is in no way appropriate for this. It is far too high, too bulky and will be dominant, the current Inn is a modest two-storey building in brick, suitable in material and profile for the location."
