Photos sent to Nub News by local resident Geoff Ousbey show scaffolding being put in place at St Mary's Church tower in Warwick ahead of its major renovation project.

Through its Campaign 2023 project, St Mary's has been trying to raise £1.8 million for repointing, pointing, repairing and replacing the eroded stonework in time for the church's 900th anniversary this year.

While the works get underway, Northgate Street, Church Street and Old Square have been closed, and will be until the scaffolding is fully in place.

A recent update in the church's online newsletter said: "We do apologise for the length of time that these roads will be closed and for the disruption that this will cause. We understand the difficulties that this can cause surrounding communities and would like to thank you for your continued patience.

"The restoration work itself will take place from March to November.

"In order not to disrupt Christmas trading or activities, the removal of the scaffolding will be delayed until 2024 as the roads will need to be closed again.

"We will continue to post the latest information on our Campaign 2023 Website and our social media pages."

St Mary's, which was founded on its present site in 1123 by Roger de Newburgh, is one of the UK's oldest major churches.

The church has received donations from a number of sources including Warwick District Council and the National Churches Trust.

An appeal was also recorded by Dame Judi Dench urging people to support the project.
