Permission to repair a 150-year-old leaking roof at Warwick Castle has been approved by Warwick District Council.
The town's main tourist attraction has been given listed building consent to repair much of the roof coverings above the state apartments.
Permission has been granted to renew the lead linings to the flat roof and repair the exposed timber roof structure.
Minor masonry repairs to chimneys and to the walls have also been signed off.
The castle - which says the existing roof was installed following a fire in the 1870s - said the project would protect the building in the long term.
"The proposed alterations are necessary to deal with defective and worsening condition of roof coverings and structure," the application said.
Signing off on the plans, a council report said: "It is considered that the proposed works are acceptable, being remedial in nature with the intention to weatherproof the building and prevent potential water ingress.
"The loss of the existing roofing material is considered to result in minor harm but this is outweighed by safeguarding the preservation of the heritage asset and its highly significant internal fabric, by ensuring the building remains weathertight.
"This standpoint is supported by Historic England.
"Overall, the works are considered to maintain the special historic and architectural character of both the listed building and the conservation area."
