Warwick Boat Club didn't have permission for new padel court - councillors to discuss application

Warwick Boat Club did not have permission to install a temporary padel court at its Mill Street site, and councillors will next week decide whether it can keep the facility.
A retrospective planning application for the "pop up" court will be decided by Warwick District Council's (WDC) planning committee.
Some 17 objections have been submitted to the scheme, with locals questioning the impact of parking, "precedent for further development" and impact on the "historically sensitive area".
However, five people have also submitted notices of support and a WDC report has recommended the application be approved.
"The proposal is considered to have an acceptable impact on the character and appearance of the area, nearby Listed Building and surrounding conservation area," the report said.
"The proposal is also considered to create no additional harm to the amenity of neighbouring uses.
"The proposals are in accordance with the aforementioned policies, and it is therefore recommended for approval."
Plans show the temporary court sits on top of one of the existing 11 tennis courts.
The court was installed in January 2025 before the council told Warwick Boat Club it needed planning permission for the development.
The application to WDC explained: "The temporary planning application seeks retrospective approval for the continued use of the padel court installed at Warwick Boat Club on an existing tennis court until March 2026.
"The court is a temporary, purpose-designed structure that complements the club's existing sports facilities while introducing the growing sport of padel.
"Given the transparent design of the court, the minimal increase in size and scale, and its integration with the existing infrastructure, the proposed development will not have an adverse impact on the surrounding area, including the conservation area or residential properties.
"The club is committed to maintaining a high standard of amenity for local residents, with no additional lighting or permanent alterations to the existing tennis court."
WDC's planning committee will consider the application on Tuesday 29 July.
