Eleven trees in the car park of Warwick's Tesco will be cut down after the district council decided not to object to the plans.

The supermarket chain had applied for permission to fell the trees around its Emscote Road store, with works also planned for a further 12.

A survey of the 63 trees on site had been completed as part of "an estate wide tree survey programme".

But Warwick District Council said it saw no problems with the plans.

A council report said: "Because of the nature of the site the trees to the front of the building were very much in the public eye, but not in the Conservation Area, whilst those trees behind the store (to the south and east) where less visible but within the CA.

"The range of works proposed seemed reasonable and a considered and appropriate response to the presenting symptoms."

Alongside the 11 trees earmarked for felling, the rest will be pollarded, coppiced or have their crowns raised.

Tesco said the work was needed due to the "risk of direct damage to structures, people or vehicles caused by trees located at the store address".

Four of the trees were classed as 'high risk' with the supermarket chain saying work needed to be completed in the next three months.

The rest will be addressed within the next six to 12 months.

WDC said it had not been to look at the condition of the trees but instead relied on "the comprehensive report" submitted by Tesco.

However last week the council did decide to protect two London Plane Trees in the car park of The Nelson Club saying: "These are an attractive addition to what is otherwise a nondescript urban setting."
