Warwick locals filled up the streets this weekend for the St Georges Day Party over the weekend (25 April).

Held on Smith Street, the event was a day for all filled with family-friendly activities, shopping from local vendors and entertainment.

St Georges Day, celebrated on 23 April, is the feast day of England's patron saint to commemorate the anniversary of his death in 303 AD.He is famously known for the legend of slaying a dragon to save a princess, a classic symbol of good overcoming evil.

The day quickly became a time to celebrate English identity and culture, with traditions of wearing a red rose and brandishing the St George's Cross.

To celebrate the occasion, Warwick takes to the historic Smith Street every year and turns it into a pedestrianised area for traditional celebrations.

The day also featured a mix of historical reenactments such as live sword fighting demonstrations by the Knights of Middle England and the Punch and Judy show, a traditional English glove puppet show.

The free community festival surrounds Smith Street specifically as it is known as the oldest shopping street in Warwick, with its history dating back to the 17th century where it served as a medieval suburb that escaped the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694.
