Post locker 'disgracefully' blocks memorial plaque to Warwick-born boxing champion
Warwick's MP has blasted the "disgraceful" decision to put a post collection locker in front of a plaque in memory of a legendary boxer born in the town.
MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western has called on InPost to immediately move its new collection point from its spot outside Sainsbury's covering the memorial to Dick Turpin.
In 1948 the Warwick-born athlete became the first black British boxer to break the so-called 'colour bar' – which prevented non-white boxers competing for major titles - and became the first black athlete to win a title in any British sport.
After much campaigning a blue plaque was unveiled last November.
But following the installation of the parcel locker Mr Western said InPost was "insulting" Turpin's memory.
"This is disgraceful," he said.
"The long-fought-for blue plaque for legendary Warwick-born boxer Dick Turpin has been completely covered by a cumbersome post collection locker.
"The company InPost must act immediately to remove the locker. Sainsbury's management must liaise with the firm to find a new spot for it.
"The plaque honouring the eldest of the Turpin brothers, Dick, was erected outside Sainsbury's in Warwick last November – with members of his family, Commonwealth Games 2022 heavyweight gold medallist Lewis Williams and the boxing press on hand to mark the occasion.
"The actions of InPost are an insult to his memory, his legacy, his brothers and the rest of their family and to the boxing community of Warwick and Leamington."
Warwick Nub News has contacted Sainsbury's and InPost for comment.
