Plans to convert Warwick house into hairdressers look set to be refused despite local support
Plans to turn part of a terraced house in Warwick into a hairdressers look set to be refused despite considerable support from local residents.
An application had been submitted to Warwick District Council to turn a garage conversion at the front of a house in Piers Close into a hairdressers to allow the business to keep its overheads down.
But district planners have recommended that the scheme be refused saying that the council cannot allow retail development in a residential street outside the town centre.
A WDC report said: "The applicant seeks to locate a retail use within a residential area of Warwick which is outside of the town centre.
"This would have a harmful impact on the vitality and viability of the town centre by directing a service away from this area and reducing footfall.
"It would also set an undesirable precedent for similar development if approved, which cumulatively could have a significant negative impact."
It also said the application, which was also objected to by Warwick Town Council, had not shown that a smaller, town centre location was available.
Despite the council's position some 43 supporting comments have been made to the application with residents saying small independent businesses should be supported and that the new location would divert cars away from the town centre.
WDC's planning committee will discuss the scheme on Wednesday, October 11.
The application can be read in full here.
