District planners have signed off on plans to build a Timpson pod in the car park of Warwick's Tesco.

The supermarket giant had applied for planning permission for the small retail unit for its Emscote Road store, adding to the 500 that are already open nationwide.

With the pod set to see four parking spaces removed, Tesco had been told to look at other locations, but the application said outside the supermarket was the best site.

"The pod relies on the footfall created by way of its location adjacent to an existing superstore and the preference is for these pods to be located close to store entrances, or within stores themselves," the application said.

It added: "Given the size of the pods and the nature of the retail offering, most custom comes from linked trips by existing shoppers.

"It is unlikely that customers would seek to utilise the pod in isolation from a wider visit to the existing superstore."

Following the fresh proposal, Warwick District Council signed off on the scheme.

A council report said: "It is agreed that the applicant has undertaken the required sequential assessment in a sufficiently thorough manner to inform us there is no alternative unit of the correct size and type available in a more sequentially preferential location."

The shop will offer dry cleaning, key cutting, shoe repairs, watch repairs and engraving.
