Planning application for new community centre in Warwick submitted
A planning application for a new "modern and interesting" community centre in Warwick has been submitted to the district council.
If approved, the scheme will see the new Priory Pools Community Centre built at the edge of Priory Pools Park in Warwick.
The business case for the new £2 million centre has already been backed by Warwick District Council and the project will see nearly two decades of work come to fruition.
Since 2007 the Packmores community has received community support services from a repurposed laundry space at Sussex Court Flats.
But now a more sustainable base is sought, with the application hoping to see two blocks of garages off Sussex Court demolished to make way for the single-storey building.
"Since 2007 the Packmores community has received community support services from a repurposed ex-laundry space at Sussex Court Flats, close to this new proposed site," the application explained.
"The new, purpose-built facility at the centre of the community it currently serves, would be beneficial to continue and carry out and further develop their important community work.
"Locating the new facility in the heart of the Packmores area offers several benefits, including proximity to local residents, accessibility, and the ability to support mental health and well-being through access to green space and community-based events.
"The proposed facility aims to address identified needs and enhance community wellbeing by providing a range of much-needed accessible and inclusive services in a central location."
The centre will feature a large multi-purpose hall, two interview rooms, a group room, two servery's, a café, pantry space, reception and toilets.
Plans state the design is "modern and interesting" to create an "exciting and welcoming sight" that encourages the local residents to use the centre.
The centre will be run by a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Priory Pools Community Centre) in partnership with The Gap Warwick, "allowing the important work already being undertaken from the existing community centre to continue, while adding additional services for the community".
The application continued: "The objectives of the CIO and the Gap encompass supporting mental health and wellbeing, as well as creating an indoor community space that is spacious enough to host a variety of activity groups and support groups.
"This space would also serve as a warm and welcoming hub which is much needed during the Cost-of-Living crisis, offering a friendly environment for elderly residents and individuals experiencing loneliness in the neighbourhood.
"Through this development, a vibrant community space that fosters social connections can flourish, providing essential support services, and enhancing the overall quality of life for all residents.
"This initiative will help build a stronger, more inclusive community."
Once planning approval is granted, fundraising can begin, with the project expected to cost around £2 million.
