New fish and chip shop and gelateria to open in Heathcote this July
A new fish and chip shop and gelateria is set to open in Heathcote at the end of June.
Building on the success of his Clopton Catch shop in Stratford-on-Avon, Andy Calleja will host a soft opening at Harbury Catch at the start of July - bringing his 25 years of industry experience to Warwick and Leamington.
Having started his career working at McDonalds, Andy opened his first shop aged 25 in the Black Country.
But now he says he has found the right formula to bring his high-end fish and chips to Lower Heathcote Square.
"I went into Stratford with fresh ideas and wanting to deliver this product the best way that I can," he said.
"Our slogan is 'fresh food comes to those who wait'.
"Everything is freshly cooked in house, everything that says it is homemade, is exactly that.
"We have been doing what I believed in, and luckily the people of Stratford have bought into that with us."
Adding: "I want it to be an experience for the customer. It is the nation's favourite dish, it's no longer a cheap and cheerful meal, so why should it be treated like that."
The second 'Catch' shop will open at Lower Heathcote Square nearly a year after Andy was first shown the site.
Harbury Catch will be the first business to take over the new unit, meaning he has had a hands-on approach to designing the layout and decor.
"If I took on a third outlet I think I'd do the same and take over the shell and put my stamp on it," he said.
"Clopton has been a big success in such a small amount of time.
"Sure we are now moving into bigger premises but the template is exactly the same. The menu, the look of the show, the quality will all be the same."
As well as inside and outdoor seating, draft beer, a new vegan menu and even a range of "quirky and different" soft drinks, Harbury Catch will also feature a brand new ice cream shop.
Filippo's Hand Crafted Gelato will not only bring together Andy's "two loves" but will also be a poignant memory to his father - Filippo - who came to England from Sicily in 1969, leaving his job as an English teacher to work in the ice cream industry.
Andy explained: "As a five year old I used to go down with my dad and by the time I was seven I was earning money at the family business because I was working there.
"It is a testament to my dad really - I said to him on his deathbed that I made him proud in life and I will still do so after life so it is a homage to him.
"And it is also a good accompaniment to fish and chips. It is the two loves of my life, ice cream and fish and chips."
And with the opening just weeks away, Andy said he was looking forward to showing people what he could do and getting back to what he does best.
"I am excited. It has been a long few months of getting it ready, but also serving customers and running a shift is what I love doing best.
"But we know that it is not a god given right and we have to deliver. I am genuinely excited, it's the anticipation, it's planting the seeds and watching the flower grow at the moment."
Harbury Catch will have a soft launch on July 7 and open fully on July 11.
