MP welcomes work on new lifts at Warwick Station beginning 'at last'
Warwick's MP has welcomed work "at last" starting on two new lifts at Warwick Station.
Work on the multi-million-pound project began in January and will see the new lifts installed in the existing subway as part of the government's access for all scheme.
They will provide step-free access for passengers using platforms 1 and 2 for the first time.
MP for Warwick and Leamington Matt Western said he was pleased work was underway "at least" after "years of our campaigning".
"I dropped by Warwick Station early this morning on my way down to Westminster for the week ahead. Brilliant to see Murphy's, on behalf of Network Rail, beginning the work to install the much-needed lifts to make the station accessible," he said yesterday (February 6).
"Credit due to Labour Councillor John Holland - County Councillor for Warwick West who has been campaigning for these lifts for a long time.
"I've been really pleased to work with him in his vital campaign and it's great to see the work beginning today.
"The work will last many months but will be a massive boost in improving access for less able folk or those with children's buggies and luggage."
Network Rail said the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, will see the subway between platforms 1 and 2 closed from Friday 3 March.
From Monday 25 February, platform 1 will also be shortened so that work can take place safely while allowing trains to keep running.
However this will see one less train a day calling at Warwick - though those services will continue to call at Warwick Parkway and Leamington Spa.
