Motorists were left frustrated at "nightmare" roadworks on the A46 over the weekend.

The dual carriageway was closed around the Leek Wootton junction southbound, forcing three lanes into one and then making drivers exit the road before getting back on at the other side of the junction.

This saw significant delays and tailbacks along the A46.

Neighbouring roads also experienced significant delays.

Motorists were quick to take to social media to vent their frustration.

One driver wrote: "Don't bother! Been in it for 1hr 10 mins. Says roadworks for all that and not one workman in [sight]. Disgraceful!"

Another said: "I left Coventry at 11.30am. Heading southbound on A46. Now 1.45pm and still stuck in traffic on the way to Warwick."

"All those delays for all those people all day for absolutely nothing," another wrote.

"I despair of this country and its road closures."

Police had warned locals in advance there would be "significant delays".

The works were organised by National Highways as part of the ongoing repairs at the Guys Cliffe bridge.

Nub News reported earlier this year the year-long works at the A46 junction still have no clear end date in site.

Roadworks have continued around the Leek Wootton junction of the dual carriageway since a crash in December 2024.

One lane of the southbound carriageway has been shut since, while the speed limit has been reduced to 60mph for the narrower lanes now in place across the bridge.

A National Highways spokesperson told Nub News: "One lane of the A46 was closed following an incident which caused damage to the bridge and safety barrier.

"We've since carried out some initial repairs and are going through the design and approval process for further specialist repairs which will take place in due course.

"In the interim, we are reviewing the current closure to consider when it would be safe to reopen the road fully."
