Man in his 70s dies after being found in critical condition near Warwick canal

An elderly man has died after being found in a 'critical condition' near the canal in Warwick.

The man, aged 70, passed away just before midnight last night (18 January) Warwickshire Police confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the area around Emscote Road in Warwick at around 7pm yesterday.

Officers were seen searching the area around the canal.

The end of Charles Street / Montague Road was also closed off to motorists.

A statement from West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed: "We were called to an incident near to Emscote Road in Warwick at 6.59pm, yesterday, and sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Critical Care Car to the scene.

"On arrival, crews found a man in a critical condition and administered advanced life support, before conveying him under emergency driving conditions to Warwick Hospital."

Warwickshire Police has since confirmed the man has passed away.

In a statement, the force said: "Sadly, despite the efforts of paramedics, the man in his 70s was pronounced dead just before midnight.

"We've spoken to his next of kin and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

"Thank you to the person who called it in, to everyone who offered help and we just want to say how much we appreciate your understanding while we dealt with a difficult incident."
