National Highways has announced more lane closures around the M40-M42 interchange as it installs new speed cameras.

The works, which will continue until mid-December, will also see vegetation cleared and drainage installed as a project to turn the central reservation into concrete continues.

National Highways said the road would be closed in 2.4-mile sections "so we can continue to deliver this work safely and minimise disruption".

Lane closures will take place between 9pm and 6am.

Signage will remain in place to inform and remind motorists of these closures.

A statement said: "We're moving towards completion of our enabling works which includes vegetation clearance, surveys, drainage and speed camera installation. We're also progressing our plans for the upgrade to the central reservation.

"So we can continue to deliver this work safely and minimise disruption, we need to temporarily close some lanes on the carriageway. To keep our workforce and motorists safe, we’ll close lanes in 4-kilometre (2.4 miles) sections while we work."

Most of the works at the M40/M42 interchange were suspended after the UK Government announced it will pause all smart motorway projects.

The £312million scheme in Warwickshire is one of four smart motorways to be put on hold after the government announced in January that more safety checks were needed.

Campaigners said smart motorways, which use the hard shoulder as live traffic lanes, are too dangerous. Whilst in November 2021 MPs on the Commons transport select committee said work should be stopped whilst more safety data was collected.

The government will now analyse five years of data from the existing 400 miles of smart motorway across the country before works resume.
