Plans for a new astroturf pitch and lighting at Warwick School have been signed off by council planners.

The Myton Road school has been granted planning permission to demolish an existing pavilion and replace a former sports field with the modern facilities for hockey.

The application - first submitted in 2024 - said: "The Myton Road site has extensive and high-quality sport provisions; however, with the large number of students on-site following the move of Kings High to the site, there is increasing pressure on these facilities.

"In particular, the existing Kings High pavilion is unable to support the current numbers of students.

"The pavilion is of poor quality and does not provide the necessary changing and hospitality space to support teaching requirements and fixtures."

It added: "The proposed facilities would be of sufficient benefit to the development of sport, and any outweigh any detriment caused by the loss of the existing areas of playing field."

When first submitted, the application also included plans for new cricket nets. These have been removed from the scheme.

Temporary toilets have been included on the land which has been used for car parking recently.

The application also revealed the school has long-term plans for a new pavilion on site, and will submit a separate plan for the new building.

Warwick District Council has this month approved the application for the astroturf.

Approving the plans, a council report said: "The principle of the proposed artificial turf pitch on the site is considered acceptable.

"The development would not result in any significant harm to the character and appearance of the area and, subject to conditions, would not result in any undue detriment to residential amenity.

"The proposal is also acceptable in terms of highway safety and flood risk impacts.

"The development would not prejudice trees or biodiversity and there would be no harm to the setting of nearby designated heritage assets."
