A flood alert has been raised in Warwick following an evening of heavy rain.

The Environment Agency has put the warning in place for the River Avon and warns of flooding to low-lying land and roads.

"River levels are rising at the Warwick Old Budbrooke Road gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall," the alert said.

"Consequently, flooding of roads is possible today, (May 22).

"We expect flooding to affect low-lying land and roads adjacent to the River Avon between Rugby and Bidford including Warwick, Stratford upon Avon, caravan parks and farmland.

"Further rainfall, some of which may be locally heavy, is forecast all day today, 22/05/24.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are actively checking river levels and the weather forecast."

Locals are advised not to use low lying footpaths and bridges near watercourses.

The alert was put in place at 6.43am this morning.

A yellow weather warning is also in place.
