A driver who fell asleep at the wheel of his car on the M40 escaped without serious injury after crashing into the central barrier and ending up in some bushes along the carriageway.

Officers from Warwickshire Police's Operational Patrol Unit were called to the scene near Gaydon only a short time after a very serious collision further down the motorway.

The driver was reported for careless driving.

A Warwickshire OPU spokesperson said: "The driver of this vehicle fell asleep whilst driving on M40 near Gaydon. He collided with the centre barrier, hit a vehicle causing it to spin into other vehicles, and left the road at high speed into these bushes.

"This was only a short time after a very serious collision had occurred a distance further north on the same motorway.

"It is only down to chance that no serious injuries were sustained.

"Driver reported for careless driving and prosecution will follow."
