Warwickshire sends nearly four times the amount of waste to landfill than neighbours Coventry according to new data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

In 2019-20 28,265 tonnes of waste was sent to landfill from the county, compared to 7,487 in Coventry.

The report also shows that Warwickshire sends the second most rubbish to landfill in the West Midlands only behind Birmingham City Council.

In percentage terms this means a tenth of Warwickshire's waste goes to landfill.

Only Herefordshire (19 per cent) sends more in the West Midlands.

Nationally the average amount of waste sent to landfill is 7.8 per cent.

A further 1,800 tonnes of Warwickshire rubbish is also incinerated without generating any energy.

This is more than the 12 other West Midlands regions combined, with Dudley coming in second at just 95 tonnes.

When it comes to recycling however, Warwickshire redeems itself with 139,000 tonnes recycled or composted in 2019-20.

Only Worcestershire and Staffordshire did more.

Whilst the county's statistics lag behind the rest of the region, Warwickshire has cut down significantly from the 63,000 tonnes sent to landfill in 2013-14.

The report brings together data from all 338 local authorities responsible for waste collection.

For Warwickshire the district and borough councils have then been grouped into the upper tier authority - Warwickshire County Council.
