Clothes and other textiles will no longer be collected from local homes, two local councils have confirmed.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council and Warwick District Council have announced the kerbside textiles recycling service will be "temporarily suspended" from 1 April.

The news comes as The Salvation Army, the councils' current textiles partner, struggles with its recycling works.

The charity's clothing banks are to be removed from the waste depots in both districts, so the councils are "unable to continue offering the current kerbside textiles recycling service in its existing form".

The decision has been blamed on "challenging market conditions, rising operational costs and wider geopolitical instability".

While the service is suspended, the councils are encouraging locals to donate their unwanted clothes to local charity shops or get them repaired at local repair cafes.

"Items that cannot be reused, donated, or repaired must not be placed in household recycling bins," a council statement said.

"Textiles cannot be processed at the Sherbourne Materials Recovery Facility and placing them in recycling bins can contaminate loads."

Cllr Will Roberts, portfolio holder for neighbourhood at Warwick District Council said: "Whilst we want to encourage all our residents to recycle as many household items as possible, we would like to ask them to follow these temporary guidelines for the disposal of textiles, while we seek a practical and sustainable alternative."
