Council looks to merge Myton Path and athletics projects to save up to £1.7m

£1.7 million could be saved by Warwick District Council (WDC) as it looks to merge two of its biggest infrastructure schemes.
The council's cabinet will next week decide on the move which could see the works for the new Myton Path and the new athletics facility off Fusiliers Way pulled into one huge project.
The local authority has been working on the two major schemes for several years and both form part of the much wider developments south of Warwick and Leamington.
Now WDC wants to streamline both plans to save money and make the processes more efficient.
"Both schemes impact on one another and by having two separate schemes, runs a risk of increased costs, key designs of drainage for example are not fit for purpose for both schemes, one scheme holding up the other scheme, and so on," a council report explained.
It continued: "There will be a reduction in the overall delivery costs of the schemes, as this only requires one project management team, one contractor, a potential reduction in support functions.
"This has the potential to save £1.7m on the current total budget allocation across both schemes."
Councillors will also vote on whether to release up to £950,000 in allocated funding to bring both projects through to planning.
The Myton Path will see a pedestrian and cycle link created from Myton Road to Fusiliers Way. The link will have entrances to Myton School and Warwick School as well as to the proposed new athletics facility which is to replace the current one at Edmonscote.
The proposed savings come after last year it was revealed Myton Path is set to cost more than the £150,000 originally budgeted.
It was recently announced the third part of the scheme for the area - Leamington FC's new stadium - is set to be delayed.
