A teenager from Bishop's Tachbrook arrested on Wednesday (November 8) after reportedly crashing into a bridge and a police car has been released on bail.

The 19-year-old was arrested after reportedly trying to perform a handbrake turn on Clopton Bridge in Stratford-upon-Avon after allegedly failing to stop for a Warwickshire Police patrol car.

Two police officers were injured during the incident, but an infant and a pregnant woman in the other car were not seriously injured.

The driver was "briefly hospitalised" before being taken into custody.

An update shared by police today said the teenager was arrested on suspicion of: failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with licence, driving without insurance, child cruelty/neglect.

"He has since been released on police bail while the investigation progresses," a force statement on social media said.

"Please rest assured that the correct safeguarding measures are being taken in relation to the last point on that list.

"We'll keep you all updated."

The grade I listed bridge was inspected by a structural engineer overnight and there was concern expressed as to its safety – so it was closed.

It has since reopened after works were completed.
