A teenager from Bishop's Tachbrook has been arrested after reportedly crashing into a bridge and a police car, while he had a pregnant woman and an infant in the car.
The 19-year-old was arrested last night (November 8) after reportedly trying to perform a handbrake turn on Clopton Bridge in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The driver reportedly failed to stop for Warwickshire Police officers, two of whom were injured during the crash.
The infant and the woman were not seriously injured.
The driver was "briefly hospitalised" before being taken into custody where he remains.
"Late last night two of our officers were on vehicle patrol in the town when they noticed a suspicious car," a force post on social media said.
"The driver of the car reportedly failed to stop for us and then, while trying to get away along the Clopton Bridge, he reportedly performed a handbrake turn.
"In the process, he managed to smash into both the bridge and our police car – injuring two of our officers.
"Unknown to us until after the collision was the fact that there was a pregnant woman and an infant in the car.
"Thankfully, they were not seriously injured."
The grade I listed bridge was inspected by a structural engineer overnight and there was concern expressed as to its safety – so it was closed.
One lane is now open, with only traffic into Stratford being let through.
"We would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding," police added.
"We're also sure you'll join us in being incredibly grateful that the suspect's alleged actions last night did not result in something far worse happening."
